What are you twittering on about? (19th March 2008)

“Web 1.0 - Find Me
Web 2.0 - Join Me
Web 3.0 - Follow Me”

Thomas Power, Chairman Ecademy.com

More importantly what’s your business twittering about?

If your business isn’t taking advantage of Twitter as online PR and marketing tool, you could be missing out on a golden opportunity.

Twitter is a micro-blogging site traditionally used by members to update friends with what they are doing, thinking or feeling, such as  “About to catch a plane to Barbados” or “Frustrated with the unreliable and slow train route from Bracknell to London”. The status messages, known as ‘Tweets’, can be up to 140 characters long, so that they can be sent from mobile phones or email, or embedded into a web page or social networking site.

How can you use Twitter to your advantage?

  • Personal or professional status
  • Emergency information
  • News Headlines - Businesses news and News sites such as CNN
  • Special events such as concerts or parties
  • Product and special offer announcements

Step 1:
Write a list of all the short pieces of information you wish to communicate, such as events, news, ticket availability, product/service launches or status

Step 2
Think about the audience

Step 3
Register an account at Twitter.com for each audience you would like to attract. Personalise the account with photos, web link and mobile phone numbers, so you can add status messages from your phone.

Step 4
Start updating your statuses on a regular basis

Step 5
Let others know you are on twitter, by emailing your contacts and embedding your twitter feed into your web site and social networking profiles.

Useful Twitter Tools

TWIRL – Desktop tool, which allows you to manage all your twitter accounts in one place. E.g post and respond to messages
